Eli Mardock‘s first EP is an escapist’s wet dream. Mardock contemplatively croons powerful tales, ’NE Sorrow Is Born’ a record drenched in his own expressive desolation.

Haunting melodies and refrains have a sombre quality to them where you imagine Mardock lost in his own sound, trapped in a Cimmerian fantasy where there’s only time for repentance and wistful contemplation.

Inclined to suggest that this EP, the one to follow later this year and the full album release on the horizon are Mardock’s way of achieving catharsis, a way of cleansing himself and starting anew. A bad (band) break-up two years ago will take time to recover from and this EP has the feel of that post-breakup melancholic phase preceding the rebirth.

A leaked single from his upcoming album has all those ‘born again’ hallmarks, a more emphatic song reminiscent of the best of Arcade Fire that suggests the past is moving swiftly behind him.

Those who remember Eagle Seagull fondly will take time too to move on: it’s best to start the cleansing process with ‘NE Sorrow Is Born‘ and finish on a high with ‘Everything Happens For The First Time’…
